At  the workplace, there are different people with different attitudes towards certain groups of people; this attitudes and believes bring anger, frustrations and bitterness especially in the people whom they are aimed at. For instance, a male employee with an attitude toward women may have difficulties relating with women at the workplace. This creates tension between them and eventually affects their performance at work and eventually the performance of the whole company. The attitudes usually lead to employees behaving unethically towards their fellow employees, therefore, companies with employees with a different I culture have to think of a way to minimize such attitudes. This includes involving all its employees in the activities of the company without any discrimination.

Employees in an organization are different in gender; there are perception about certain gender for instance, women are not trusted with the higher positions. Therefore, incase of any job opening at higher levels, women in the organization are not encourages to apply, regardless of their qualifications and capabilities. This is because they are believed to have other family responsibilities, which might hinder their performance, and they end up losing big opportunities to better their careers. The organizations with such perceptions sometimes lose  services of competent employees because of their perception. The employees also lose morale in their work because they know that even if they work hard they don’t stand a chance to be promoted because of their gender; this affects their performance, hence the performance of the organization is affected. The same case applies to the employees who have a different race or belong to an ethnic group different from the rest of their employees.

Age differences can be an issue at work; the older employees might look down upon the younger ones, claiming that they have little experience in life as well as in the work they are doing. Such perceptions cause discrimination in decision making, and the younger employees feel left out on matters concerning the organization. This makes the young ones to lose morale in their work and the way they perceive the older employees; hence, there is a general effect on the performance of the employees. A company with more of young employees than old employees might experience the same from the young employees, and this might encourage unethical behavior at workplace.

Organization come up with policies and procedures, which are supposed to be followed by the  each employee in the organizations. The impact of the policies and procedures of the organization on the ethics. For instance, the procedures of an organization in promoting their employees, recruiting new employees, awarding their employees among others impacts the ethics of an organization. An organization, which have transparent procedures and eliminate discrimination promotes ethical behaviors among employees. This is because no employee would think of discriminating others and treating them in an unethical manner; every one would work hard for the common goal of the organization.

Organization policies like the policies concerning promotion of diversity at work would have an impact on the ethics of an organization. For instance, an organization which employees people from different culture, gender and age have a workforce that promotes diversity in terms of culture, age, and gender. Such employees learn to tolerate others with their differences and preferences, which reduces the level of misunderstanding at work and promotes ethical behaviors.

Valerie Young an employee in the United States  discovered her managers unethical behavior of taking bribes from the suppliers under the name of the company. The manager feels that he can act this way because of his position as a manager. Valerie finds herself in an awkward position; she is a foreigner and reporting current employer jeopardizes her job. She was advised by her boyfriend to keep the secret she had known about her manager in order to keep her job. This was a dilemma for her because reporting her boss would lead her to lose her job, and not reporting him would affect the other employees in the department, also she should not let her boss get away with the unethical behavior. It is her responsibility to report any unethical behavior in the department, and at the same time, she is responsible for her career development. The threat to her career affects her decision of reporting unethical behavior of her manager, although she is not willing to le her boss to get away with his unethical behavior.

Valerie should not have not faced all those problems; her discovery about the manager’s invoices in the copiers should have been enough information to help her to report the manager. She should not have kept the information to herself, first she should have send the invoices to the upper management through an anonymous person. By doing this, no one would have noticed that she was the one who discovered the information about her boss and reported him. She would have been safe with her citizenship, school status and work more secure from her boss retaliation. The situation would be handled by the management without her involvement.  Knowing that the management is mandated with the ethical behavior of its employees including the managers, should have kept her from worries knowing that she had done the right thing concerning the situation.

In an organization, whenever people come together with the same purpose they create a culture. This people could be an neighborhood, a family, company and project team. Out of the combined energies, attitudes and thoughts of this people, the culture in the company where Valerie was working created attitudes and negative attitudes. This made Valerie to be in a dilemma, because she wondered how she could corporate with an individual whom his thoughts are bred basing on culture.  The manager has a poor culture of hunger and greed money, with this unethical behavior he could not lead his juniors well. His major goal was to enrich himself, instead of working with the other employees towards a common goal of improving the company.

At the workplace, there are different people with different attitudes towards certain groups of people; this attitudes and believes bring anger, frustrations and bitterness especially in the people whom they are aimed at. In the case of Valerie, the attitude of her employer towards foreigners contributed to her not doing the right thing; she had to protect her job. This shows that differences and the preferences make people to act in unethical while at work, and this unethical behavior deters the goals of employees in an organization.
